Sandwich, Massachusetts, occupies the Upper Cape near the eastern end of the Cape Cod Canal and is recognized as the oldest town on Cape Cod. Its historic center combines colonial-era homes, a village common, small shops, galleries, and landmarks around Shawme Pond. The town extends from inland woodlands and freshwater ponds to salt marshes and Cape Cod Bay, giving it a varied coastal landscape. Sandwich is especially associated with glassmaking, a craft that became an important local industry and remains part of its identity through museums, working studios, and the designated Glass Town Cultural District.

Sandwich’s cultural identity reflects Indigenous heritage, maritime commerce, agriculture, craftsmanship, and early settlement on Cape Cod. The Hoxie House, one of the town’s notable historic residences, illustrates the character of early Cape Cod architecture, while the Dexter Grist Mill continues to demonstrate traditional corn grinding beside Shawme Pond. Glassmaking is perhaps the town’s most distinctive cultural legacy, with the Sandwich Glass Museum preserving examples of locally produced glass and demonstrating glassblowing techniques. Historic Route 6A, also known as the Old King’s Highway, passes through the village and connects historic homes, galleries, restaurants, and independent shops.

The Sandwich Boardwalk is one of the town’s best-known landmarks, crossing Mill Creek, dunes, and salt marshes before reaching Town Neck Beach. Its wooden walkway provides views of coastal wetlands and shorebirds. Heritage Museums & Gardens covers about 100 acres near Shawme Pond, combining formal gardens, wooded trails, sculptures, historic collections, and a vintage automobile museum. The nearby Cape Cod Canal offers another setting for walking, cycling, boating, and observing passing vessels. Inland conservation areas and trails extend through forests, cranberry bogs, ponds, and marshes, showing a quieter side of the Cape beyond its beaches.

Sandwich’s food traditions reflect its coastal setting and Cape Cod connections, with seafood, clams, lobster rolls, baked goods, and seasonal produce appearing on local menus. Independent cafés and restaurants along Route 6A and in the historic village provide places to sample regional dishes while exploring the town on foot. The local landscape also retains evidence of cranberry cultivation, an important agricultural tradition on Cape Cod. One unusual detail is the continued operation of the Dexter Grist Mill, where corn is ground using traditional milling equipment. Together with the Glass Town Cultural District, the mill demonstrates how working crafts remain visible within Sandwich’s historic center.
